SOPRANO
Maria Gaia Pellegrini, soprano, was born in Florence in 1985 and began studying music at the age of five in the choirs of the Music School of Fiesole, where she also addressed her piano studies under the guidance of Mr.Tiziano Mealli. At the age of ten, in November 1995, she was the third appearance in "Macbeth" by Verdi, directed by Mr. James Conlon at the Teatro Comunale in Florence and after she played for three seasons - the summers of 1997, 2000 and 2001 - the role of a Shepherd in "Tosca" at the Festival Puccini in Torre del Lago, receiving praise from artists like Jose Cura, Ines Salazar, Norma Fantini, Sherrill Milnes, Daniela Longhi and Salvatore Licitra. She also interpreted, as soloist, operettas "The Little Sweep" by B. Britten and "Brundibar" by Hans Krasa at Piccolo Teatro Comunale in Florence in 1996 and 1997 and in 1999 she was one of the two boys in "Jakob Lenz" by Wolfgang Rihm, always at Piccolo Teatro Comunale, while in spring 1999, she prepared the role of Yniold in "Pelleas et Melisande" by Debussy, under the baton of Mr. Sinopoli and M.o Bosman. In summer 2002, she interpreted the Page of the Duchess in "Rigoletto" for Opera Festival in Fiesole (FI) and in the fall of 2004 she successfully took part in the masterclass held by Julia Hamari for “Gli Amici della Musica” in Florence.In January-February 2007 she played the role of the female protagonist, the orphan Aletta, in the two-acts operetta "La Magica Fontana", composed by the contemporary blind musician Benito Zorzit. In June 2008 she played famous opera arias during a recital, held in the church of Santo Stefano al Ponte in Florence, accompanied by young American musicians of the Warren Orchestra and organized by the Intenational Musical Festival. Even in summer 2008, during the summer season of Operafestival, she played the role of Papagena in "Die Zauberfloete" by Mozart and Annina in "La Traviata" by Verdi - the latter one under the baton of Mr. Bruno Rigacci – these two operas took place in the Boboli Gardens in Florence and the abbey of St. Galgano (SI). In August of the same year she took part at the course in "Vocal technique and interpretation," held by Mrs. Fiorenza Cossotto, from which she received many appreciations, at the School of Music in Bertinoro (FC).In December 2008 she played Haendel famous arias during the Christmas concerts held by the Mozart Association Orchestra, under the baton of Mr. Stefano Burbi, at the Basilica of St. Lorenzo and the Air War College, both in Florence, and in May 2009 she played once again the orphan Aletta for a revival of the operetta "La Magica Fontana", which took place in theaters and schools in the Italian districts of Pordenone, Udine and Trieste. Between June and July 2009 she played again the role of Papagena in "Die Zauberfloete" to the abbey of St. Galgano (SI), in the summer program of Operafestival, and in August 2009 she took part in the XXXII International Festival "Encounter with Piano", held in Praia a Mare (CS), in which she played the Liedercyclus "Frauenliebe und Leben” by Schumann and several famous opera arias from the XIX century repertoire, in a duo with Simona Capristo.
In December 2009 she sang at the Teatro Verdi in Florence, as a soprano soloist, in a concert dedicated to Tiziano Terzani, coinciding with the first edition of the Literary Award Terzani, with music composed for the occasion by the Florentine composer Luca Di Volo, while in may 2010 she sang, as a soprano soloist again, in the 3rd concert “Nuove Voci per la lirica”, organized by Associazione Pratolirica, in which she played arias and duets from the XIX century repertoire. In June of the same year she won the 2nd prize at the first Florence music competition “Premio Crescendo” and in July 2010 she played again the role of Papagena in the Boboli Gardens in Florence and in the abbey of S. Galgano (SI), once again organized by Operafestival, receiving public and critical success. In November of the same year she sang, again as a soprano soloist, for the final project of contemporary musical theatre named “Timur”, directed by the contemporary composer Azio Corghi and organized by Scuola di Musica di Sesto Fiorentino (FI), at Teatro della Limonaia in Sesto Fiorentino (FI). In December 2010, she was personally chosen by Mr. Gustav Kuhn to participate, as soprano soloist, at the Christmas concert, which is traditionally held every year at the Abbey of Montegral, where courses are held at the homonymous academy conducted by Mr. Kuhn himself. From April to October 2011, she participates in Maggio Fiorentino Formazione baroque opera courses and in March 2011she began a profitable collaboration with the Association OMEGA Music in Prato, with which she holds lots of operatic concerts in prestigious Tuscan locations for important events, including the concert for the celebration of the 65-year career of the baritone Rolando Panerai; with the same association, in January 2012, she plays the role of Ceprano Countess in Verdi's Rigoletto at the Teatro Dante in Campi Bisenzio (Florence).For ten years now, Maria Gaia has sung, in several recitals, chamber music arias, lieder and songs by Bach, Mozart, Bellini, Schubert, Schumann and Fauré; she also performed in lots of concerts with the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina - the last two acclaimed concerts with this orchestra date back to June 2011 - and with other ensembles of Florentine instrumentalists, playing important pages of baroque music.
Maria Gaia loves particularly German Romanticism and also Mozart and XIX century repertoire. She currently continues her musical studies under the guidance of Ms Nicoletta Maggino and Mrs Alessandra Rossi De Simone; she also graduated with top honors in Communication Sciences at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Florence, from which, at present, she's specializing in Linguistics.
